Many years ago psychological issues and how people thought was regarded as taboo, along with a lot of other good things.  Thankfully all that has changed. Information, technologies and conversations are ‘out there’ with some of it becoming downright interesting.  And, of course, men are involved in it all now too.

Figures have been quoted that indicate that about 1 in 5 people suffer from some sort of psychological challenge. It is not unusual. It is commonplace.

Everyone knows a number of people (or lots of them) with all sorts of stuff they’re dealing with. Some of ‘them’ happen to be ourselves, and that’s OK.  It’s part of life.

Examples of the sorts of situations and feelings, which present psychological challenges include:

  • Stress (see also Learning to Relax, and Help at Work, The Next Day)
  • Depression (Helpful websites are:  www.beyondblue.org.au, www.depressionet.com.au)
  • Anxiety and Phobias, Irrational Fears (incl. obsessive compulsive disorder, etc)
  • Loss, Grief and Shock  (The website for the National Association for Loss and Grief is:  www.nalag.org.au)
  • Unresolved life issues
  • Domestic violence and other manipulations (for both the doer and the receiver)
  • Addictions and substance abuse (incl. drugs and alcohol)
  • Dysfunctional families (sometimes for generations)
  • Personality Disorder
  • Prescription drug dependence (including sleeping pills, see Getting off Sleeping Tablets)
  • Withdrawal from some prescription and non-prescription drugs and other addictions
  • Anxiety-triggering health conditions (insomnia itself being one)
  • Lack of exercise (associated with stress, depression, anxiety)
.. and Christmas day for most!

Not all psychological challenges will cause insomnia, but some have definitely been associated with it.  Resolving psychological issues can be the secret to a better night’s sleep.  Avoiding the issue is counter-productive.

Some of the above situations and challenges will make it more difficult for you to:

  • Fall asleep (such as an overactive, stressed, anxious or disturbed thought pattern).  See Hard to Fall Asleep
  • Some will disturb the sleep you get and reduce the benefit of sleep (e.g. substance abuse including excessive alcohol). See Restless, Light and Broken Sleep
  • Some will make it more difficult to fall asleep again, when you wake in the middle of the night (e.g. phobias, irrational fears, depression, unresolved life issues).  See Restless, Light and Broken Sleep
  • Others have been associated with waking up early and not being able to get back to sleep (e.g. grief and shock, depression).  See Waking Up Too Early
