The strongest indication of depression comes from the early morning wakers!

Depression

At least 80% of depressed people experience insomnia.  They have difficulty falling asleep or more often – staying asleep.

In fact, early morning awakening is a virtual give away of depression.  Another 15% of the depressed sleep excessively.  There is speculation, that it is more than just a symptom of depression, it may in fact unleash the mood disorder and or be an early indicator of it.  Sleep researcher Michael Perlis Ph.D. thinks so.

The first thing we recommend is to establish whether your depression is related to prescription or non-prescription medications, alcohol, recreational drugs etc.  For some leads in this area please refer to Side Effects of Prescription and Non-Prescription Medicines.  It is possible, for example, that a drug you have been prescribed (e.g. for lowering your cholesterol levels) may have a side effect for you of depression, and you may have to speak to your GP about the alternatives available.

Please refer to the sections on Depression, and Loss, Grief and Shock.
